Massapeague

(Great Water Land)

This thesis originates in Massapequa, NY (formerly known as Massapeague or Marsapegue), a town in Long Island. Surrounded by what feels like an endless continuation of single-family detached homes, this thesis proposes a heart within Massapequa - a town center that gives its residents, and the greater Long Island community, a new identity located on the site of the abandoned Sunrise Mall.

As this mall is slated for demolition, this thesis proposes transforming it into a pond that serves as a natural connective force between the site’s natural history and the community of Massapequa. The proposed shops, governmental tower, and event spaces reference both its community and ancient natural barrier, constructing a joining of past & present, of natural & man-made.
